Fairy Godmother
February 24, 2019#BalanceforBetter: International Women’s Day 2019
March 8, 2019Our family bathroom is one of the two rooms that I hate
The kitchen is the other one. I hate them. They are just not ‘us’ and we don’t think that a lick of paint will change this [I tried it with the kitchen last year and yep, I still hate it]
We both have our dreams of what these rooms should be but this is not our forever home, so we don’t want to spend lots of money trying to put some of those grand ideas into our house [plus, this would mean extending our existing house and we really do not have the money to do that!]
So we are going to embark on trying to change these two rooms on the cheap and try to inject some love into those rooms so that we can enjoy them for the next 18 months or so.
First up is the family bathroom.
Nice enough but that’s the word.
Nice.
It’s so boring! It’s clean, white, strange off white/cream coloured tiles and there was a gorgeous brown lino floor which we ripped up last year and replaced with grey bathroom laminate. There honestly is nothing wrong with it. It’s a new build bathroom. Basic. Does what it says on the tin.
But there is nothing that stirs my loins in there. Nothing of interest.
In fact, the most interesting thing in there are the shutters [which I actually do love] and the thriving house plants [who knew that they would survive in the bathroom?!]
The Plans
In an ideal world, I would rip out the bath and replace with a roll top bath, sort out the bloody annoying shower screen, change the sink and toilet round and do numerous other things but as I said above, I do not want to spend thousands on this room.
So plans are…
Replace the sink area – this will be the place of interest. I have seen a few interiors accounts do this and I love it. Basically find a pre-loved chest of drawers or something of that ilk and plumb a sink into the top of it. I honestly think this would look so cool and would fit in with the rest of our decor. Luckily I am married to quite a handy man, who if he gets stuck has his brother and my dad as sounding boards so I think this would be relatively easy to accomplish. Plus it would give us storage that we are lacking!
Sort out the bath frontage – the plastic has discoloured and has marks on it. I think it cheapens the whole room so this needs replacing. I quite fancy a wood frontage or even using the same wood as the floor.
Paint – it has been really difficult to find a paint that goes with the tiles in this room. I am not going to rip them out or paint over them so an easier job is just to go with white. If the vanity unit is pulled off then I think the white will really set it off.
Decor – we will get rid of the corner unit [it is currently only a dumping ground anyway] and replace that wall with art and mirrors. I love our barth/bath print and as this room is only used for the kids’ bathtime, it does not get very damp so prints will survive in here!
So not a lot to do when I have written it down – just got to source the furniture and find the time to do it now!
I’ll let you know when we’ve achieved something!
