Are you a menstrual cup user?

I’m not [or, I wasn’t].

I’ve thought about it but never made the leap to buying one. Friends have raved about them but there were things holding me back when choosing which one would suit me best.

Are you a first time user? Have you had children? How high is your cervix? Do you have heavy flow?

I’ll be honest, my menstrual cycle wasn’t something I really had much thought about – same for how high my cervix was! Whilst I had not made the leap to using a cup, I had made the change to using organic biodegradable tampons and pads. These were fine for me but they were quite expensive!

When Intimina got in contact with me and asked if I would like to try out one of their products, I said yes! I was asked a couple of questions before I got sent out the Lily cup one – a cup for first time users or those who have not had children [they even have a product that can be worn during your period where you can still have sex – not that I want Kristian anywhere near me when I’m on mine!]

How to use

As a first time user, it was quite difficult to work out how exactly to use the cup. There were some instructions on the pack but I had to do my own research on YouTube to find a folding technique that worked for me. Insertion was…interesting. It’s not the cleanest of jobs. You have to insert quite far in order to not have the cup spring open before you have inserted it correctly. Once it’s in and you’ve checked that it has sealed against your vaginal walls, you’re good to go!

Verdict

It’s weird knowing that you have something up there collecting your period and I still wore a pad because I didn’t trust that it wouldn’t fall out or leak. It didn’t by the way.

There are many reasons why I will still keep using it – the cost [they last two to four years], the fact that it is environmentally friendly

, you can wear it up to 12 hours before emptying it [great for bedtime]. However, I don’t like the blood issue. It’s just a bit messy! I know I should really pull my big girl pants up BUT I am really squeamish and it is quite gross having to tip your blood out and then wash the cup in the sink.

Aside from that, I think they are a really good change to make.
