Tinkers Bells: a hen party weekend!

August 6, 2018Welcome to my August lust list!
August has arrived which means school holidays, long evenings, (hopefully) sunshine, holidays abroad, staycations and a general air of relaxation.
We are not due to go on holiday until next month but I thought this month would be a good opportunity to give you a round up of the reading material that I will be taking with me.
I used to love reading…and I mean REALLY love it.
It would not be unusual for me to have three or four books on the go at one time. The introduction of the Kindle meant that I did not have to be too choosey over what I took on holiday (think luggage weight…) but you just cannot beat the smell of a real book can you?
This year I will try to get through some books on holiday but two little people might make that a tad difficult…
So here are the ten books that I will (try try TRY to) be reading this Summer…
My lust list
Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
Wowzas this one has got a lot of accolades attached to it!
“Frances is twenty-one years old, cool-headed and observant. A student in Dublin and an aspiring writer, at night she performs spoken word with her best friend Bobbi, who used to be her girlfriend. When they are interviewed and then befriended by Melissa, a well-known journalist who is married to Nick, an actor, they enter a world of beautiful houses, raucous dinner parties and holidays in Provence, beginning a complex ménage-à-quatre. But when Frances and Nick get unexpectedly closer, the sharply witty and emotion-averse Frances is forced to honestly confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time.”
Oo I’m really looking forward to reading this one!
The Water Cure by Sophie Mackintosh
I have been a long standing admirer of Mrrgaret Atwood and this promises to be similar.
This has been long listed for the Man Booker Prize 2018 so it must have something about it.
The premise surrounds three girls living on an island with their mother and King. This King vanishes and their world is turned upside down when three men wash up on the beach.
Three things about Elsie by Joanna Cannon
“84-year-old Florence has fallen in her flat at Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly. As she waits to be rescued, she considers the charming new resident who looks exactly like a man she once knew – a man who died sixty years ago. His arrival has stirred distant memories she and Elsie thought they’d laid to rest. Lying prone in the front room, Florence wonders if a terrible secret from her past is about to come to light …”
Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty
Oh my god, I bloody loved Big Little Lies and this novel is from the same author!
This one is marketed as a cocktail of friendship and modern love, spiked with a little deception. If it is anything like BLL then this will be fab!
On the other side by Carrie Hope Fletcher
If you like a bit of romance then this one promises to deliver.
Evie has died at a ripe old age but she finds that she cannot pass into heaven because of three secrets that she has been carrying since her twenties. A journey of a lifetime ensues, where she learns lots of things on the way and somehow makes it back to the man that she ever truly loved. Ahhhh…
Heartburn by Nora Ephron
Ooo this one looks juicy…
“Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel discovers that her husband is in love with another woman. The fact that this woman has a ‘neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb’ is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel is a cookery writer, and between trying to win Mark back and wishing him dead, she offers us some of her favourite recipes. Heartburn is a roller coaster of love, betrayal, loss and – most satisfyingly – revenge.”
This is going to hurt by Adam Kay
I have heard so much about this one so I have to read it to see whether it lives up to the hype.
The premise is what life is like as a junior doctor: working 97 hour weeks and making life or death decisions.
I bet it’s a mixture of highs and really heartbreaking lows.
There are two other books that really should be on that list too (well, perhaps three) but I have not put them there because they are ones that I have started or need to return to.
Ice Cream for Breakfast by Laura Jane Williams is one that has been on the go for months and lies next to me on my bedside table. Anything that claims can help you rediscover your inner child and make your adult life happier is a big YES from me!
Wilde Like Me by Louise Pentland is one that I need to go back to so that when her new book Wilde About the Girl comes out on August 9th, I will be up to date and know exactly what is going on!!! Plus Louise is my friend and ya know, you’ve gotta support your friends!
I have actually finished reading Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine, which was going to be on this short list but I didn’t think I could because I had read it…I thought it was lovely though and a really easy read.
Enjoy!
